Ranaka - Ho-Lan Mountains

Yinchuan is the third destination of this western residency project, which is also my ongoing outdoor ink graffiti project.

The first stop is an abandoned arsenal at the foot of Ho-Lan Mountains, inside which are pillbox, sandpit and soil sculptures.  Soon, I created various patterns on these ruins. For me, the structure of the world can be compressed into “lines”. Like many mountains in the north west, Ho-Lan Mountain has a treasure of original rock paintings. Generally, they were painted on a relatively flat rock, depicting animals and humans in the hunting age, as well as records and scenes of hunting. We drove and found some wild rock paintings in the north of Yinchuan. These rocks are next to a mine. After a short climb, we found many gorgeous rock painting on the black rocks. The lines of these rock paintings are simple yet quite powerful. Just next to the old rock painting, I found some natural rocks and painted patterns on them, and kept them there to juxtapose with the ancient works.

About Ranaka

Ranaka is a place in southern part of Gansu province, it is more like an uncharted field appears on a highway sign for a traveler on the car. “Ranaka” for me is like an open source code to trigger some kind of drawing, the form of creations including: ink graffiti, drawing on paper, drawing on canvas, abstract sketches etc.

These works tend to capture the flow of consciousness, the initial state of symbols and the growth mechanism of organisms etc. “Ranaka” tries to allow drawing resonate with Gaia system and consciousness production, and interprets the trajectory of certain energy movement into images.
