Gray Rhino City - A History of Urban Invisibility

How alive is the wild growth in the current urban context of Beijing? How do individual artists respond to this with their artistic practice? And how do they connect their current work with the earlier spatial practices of their predecessors in Beijing?

On January 7 and 8, 2023, the Institute for Provocation, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Beijing, will organize a series of events on "Gray Rhino City" as part of the "Teahouse798" project, with lectures, film screenings, exhibition, interactive workshops, and a winter mapping to explore and investigate the above topics.

The event will begin on January 7 with a conversation with artist Zhao Tianji, who will talk about the four "Hysteria" projects she curated. In the lecture that follows, curator Song Yi will present his own observations and those of artist Ye Su, made this spring in Pingfang Village and Dongba Country Park, analyzing particularities of urban change in Beijing that deserve special attention. In particular, he will introduce Ye Su's latest work, the giant interactive mural "Gray Rhino City," which will be presented in the rooms of the Goethe-Institut. It was inspired by a gray rhino-like scrawl on an unnamed street in Dongba, Beijing's Chaoyang district ("gray rhino" is a metaphor for the risk of social crisis). The interactive mural will be on view at the Goethe-Institut from January 7 to February 11, 2023, and all are invited to participate in its creation.

The traces of the "gray rhinoceros" accidentally discovered by Ye Su represent the city's creativity - both artistic and not-so-artistic - and can come from artists* as well as ordinary people. The following day, January 8, Song Yi and Ye Su will take participants to Pingfang Village and Dongba Country Park for mapping, hoping to find, tell, and disseminate more stories about the "gray rhino" there.
