Under The Dragon Forest

In 2017, I went to Hezuo, a city in southern Gan Su province. My residency is in Hezuo Art Space. Around 100 kilometers outside the city, there are two famous Gelug temples, Langmu Temple and Labuleng Temple. Langmu Temple is of moderate size, with monks and their family living nearby. Besides the normal Tibetan setup in the temple, there is a lush forest where the monks debate Buddhist doctrines. Thus, together with lecturers and students in Arts Department, we turned the space into a ”forest”. Collaborators for drawing the “forest” include leaders, lecturers and students in Arts Department. We all drew trees on the wall, everyone created according to their own experience and understanding. After four to five days, hundreds of “trees” made it a forest. Then we hung lots of pens on the “trees”, so that audience could participate.

On the opening day, we saw a warmly jointed group, the leaders in the college also left messages. We have graffiti, comics, messages in Mandarin, Tibetan and Korean gradually grow on the wall. At the end of the exhibition period, countless texts and images were left on the mural forest.
