From Offside to Red Card


        Imagine modern football industry as an enormous art project. It is little wonder that so many artists involve their artworks into it. And, vice versa, art could be broadly seen as a sports event. Both contemporary art and football have similar lengths of history as well as the independent and paralleled systems, developing their own context and moving forward to professionalism. They are watched and consumed by the masses whose metabolic desires get satisfied through their sensory experience from art or football games. The FIFA World Cup and Continental Cup held every few years are much like Documentas, Biennales of the art world, who regularly show up in front of the whole world, ready to be tested by history and divined by glories.

        In 21st century`s era of image information, the blend of these two seems accelerating. In football industry, the art designs of jerseys, football fields and byproducts have speeded up while in art sphere, Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed made a huge public sculpture of Marco Materazzi and Zinedine Zidane, two controversial superstars in 2006 FIFA World Cup final. We can tell that some internal problems reflected by football have attracted art world`s attention and been appropriated by artists, and the word “artist” has already been used to describe those extraordinarily outstanding players by media.

         We hope this “offside” exhibition could provide inspirations of some internally related connections within these two systems, and, through every artist`s initiatives, experiment the interconnection between art and football from various aspects. 从越位到红牌


      假设现代足球产业是一个体量巨大的艺术项目,那也就不奇怪有那么多艺术家将自己的创作卷入其中了。反之,艺术也可被看作是一种广义的运动项目。当代艺术和足球是两个具有相似历史长度且独立平行的系统,不断发展出各自的上下文,走向职业化。它们都被观看、被消费,满足了大众通过感官体验获取精神代谢的欲求。每隔几年举办的世界杯、洲际杯,极其类似艺术里的文献展、双年展,它们定期展现在全世界的面前,接受历史的考验和荣耀的占卜。

      进入 21 世纪图像信息时代,两者的相融似乎活跃起来,足球行业加快了在球衣、球场、衍生品上的艺术设计与更新换代,阿尔及利亚艺术家阿德尔· 阿贝德赛梅(Adel Abdessemed)直接为2006 年世界杯决赛中的两位争议巨星马特拉齐和齐达内制作了巨大的公共雕塑作品。可以看出,足球所折射出来的一些内在问题,被艺术关注或借用了,而“艺术家”一词早已被体育媒体用来指代那些极其优秀的足球运动员。

      我们希望这次“越位”的展览可以提供两个系统间某种内部相关的启发性,并透过每位艺术家的自发创作,尝试从多种角度对足球与艺术的联合进行实验。
