Under The Dragon Forest
In 2017, I went to Hezuo, a city in southern Gan Su province. My residency is in Hezuo Art Space, which is an experimental space under Arts Department of Gansu South Nationalities College. Zhang Hongwei is the curator as well as a lecturer in the college. Hezuo locates between Xiahe, Tibetan-inhabited area, and Linxia, Hui-inhabited area. The pastoral land is vast, with countless cows and sheep.
Around 100 kilometers outside the city, there are two famous Gelug temples, Langmu Temple and Labuleng Temple. I think fate put me here again as I have visited these two temples more than ten years ago. Langmu Temple is of moderate size, with monks and their family living nearby. Besides the normal Tibetan setup in the temple, there is a lush forest where the monks debate Buddhist doctrines.
Thus, together with lecturers and students in Arts Department, we turned the space into a ”forest”.
In ancient India, there is a monk called Nagarjuna. Legend says he was born under a tree, and later entered the Dragon Palace where he got the Sutra. Since then he has opened new chapters in Mahayana and influenced deeply both Han Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. Arts teaching, similarly, needs free communication and debate, as it benefits both lecturers and students. Arts creation is like the path to the free soul, which benefits both mentally and intellectually, just as the saying goes in Buddhism, “not the same nor the different”.
In Hezuo, I hope to collaborate( the name of the city”Hezuo” means “collaboration” in Chinese) between contributions of monk Nagarjuna and debate area in Langmu Temple, and make the experimental space to produce arts projects more naturally and enlighten concepts and impulses of the students. Collaborators for drawing the “forest” include leaders, lecturers and students in Arts Department. We all drew trees on the wall, everyone created according to their own experience and understanding. After four to five days, hundreds of “trees” made it a forest. Then we hung lots of pens on the “trees”, so that audience could participate.
On the opening day, we saw a warmly jointed group, the leaders in the college also left messages. We have graffiti, comics, messages in Mandarin, Tibetan and Korean gradually grow on the wall. During the whole exhibition period, countless texts and images would left on the mural forest.
